A very thought provoking article. Thanks for sharing it. My experience in this field is as the article details – in order to help an alcoholic progress on the road to recovery, the entire family needs to be actively involved.

Interesting and unbelievable statistics! Each member of the family has a role in maintaining the alcoholic. To facilitate change all family members have to learn new roles and new ways of interacting. That supports the change for all family members. So there is both individual change and system change that support the “new normal” for all.

Dr. Cohen,
Thank you for the article and, especially, your helpful explanation in the above comments. In your explanation, you wrote, “Bowen Family Systems Therapy treats the individual with a chemical dependency as part of a family unit that has a multigenerational history that led to addictive behavior. These unresolved problems often remain, even after sustained sobriety.” In your understanding, what does it mean to say “unresolved problems” in the context of Bowen Family Systems Theory?

Thank you for this excellent discussion, which contrasts so much with the current medical cause and effect, quick fix model. There is so much more to this issue. For example, when only the individual is “treated”, the role of the self-righteous non drinker is ignored. And yet, this is so easy to observe. JP
