Individual Therapy from a Family Perspective

Individual Therapy from a Family Perspective

Conscious Striving for Authentic Adulthood

“The development of self occurs
… in and through networks of relationships
with other members of the family system.”
— Murray Bowen, MD

How is Bowen Theory Coaching different from all other family therapies?

And why should you care?

As paradoxical as it may sound, the majority of family therapists have an individualistic orientation, while Bowen Theory coaches and therapists help individuals from a family relationship perspective. So Family Therapy with One Motivated Family Member is not an oxymoron. Who knew?

In the early 1960’s Murray Bowen began to develop his approach to family therapy with one family member.” In a 1975 paper titled Family Therapy After Twenty Years, Bowen described his method of “coaching” (the quotation marks are present in the original) individuals to make changes in the context of the family they were born into and grew up in, with the goal of modifying the relationship system and reducing the level of chronic anxiety.

Working with a coach and therapist trained in Bowen Family Systems Theory will help you address and resolve leftover “stuff” from your original family so that you can:

  1. Develop purpose and direction by becoming more responsible for your own values and beliefs.
  2. Learn a more creative, less antagonistic way to manage difficult family relationships without losing connection.
  3. Improve your sense of self, personal productivity and individual well-being so that you can function in a more positive manner.
  4. Develop realistic expectations for closeness and distance to help you create and maintain strong, resilient friendships and secure intimate partner relationships.
  5. Gain more control of your emotional life, thereby freeing yourself to leave a more positive legacy for future generations.

Ronald B. Cohen, MD of Family Focused Solutions ( explains the Bowen Family System - how you can deal with a family problem with only 1 member of the family. If you are experiencing family relationship distress, choose wisely. Select a family therapist who has had specific training and will offer clear direction to help resolve identified problems. Work on self-differentiation in one’s family of origin is always available, is uniquely efficient and effective regardless of the situation, and cannot be sabotaged by anyone else. We can sum it up as Think Systemically, Act Locally.

Are you in the midst of a family crisis? Are the difficult conversations in your family becoming even more difficult? Consultation with a well-trained Bowen Family Systems Coach can help you reduce chronic stress and anxiety regardless of whether or not anyone else in your family joins with you in the process. It is healing on a deeper level.
