Ever-growing numbers of families are both living with chronic disorders over an increasingly long time span and coping with a greater number of chronic conditions, often simultaneously. An adverse physical health event increases the utilization of mental health services threefold. Integrating mental health services into primary care is a successful avenue for treating the whole person. Medical family therapy is a way to help families through the emotional process, address the psychological, emotional, and social/relational difficulties that often accompany the diagnosis and course of illness, and improve relations with the medical community.

With chronic disorders, an overarching family goal is to deal with the developmental demands of the illness without family members sacrificing their own or the family’s development as a system over time. Ron Cohen, MD will explore the emotional roller coaster that family members often find themselves on when one member of a family is sick. His presentation will help attendees identify the critical role Marriage & Family Therapists can play in offering the patient and their family the opportunity to communicate accurately among themselves, express feelings, coordinate efforts, and delegate tasks.
