Psychiatric Diagnosis May Be Bad for Your Child’s Health

I recently participated in my first annual Bowen Family Theory Symposium, which just happened to be its 50th anniversary. I was fortunate to make the “real life” acquaintance of a fellow FIW alum and colleague from “Down Under”, Jenny Brown, Director of The Family Systems Institute in Neutral Bay, Australia and author of Growing Yourself Up: How to Bring Your Best To All of Life’s Relationships. She presented a paper entitled; “Reciprocity Between Parents and Their Child’s Mental Health Treatment Program,” the title of which does not do justice to her preliminary findings that there appears to be a negative correlation between efforts to diagnose and fix the child, and the child’s emotional well-being.
