Thank you for an excellent, concise article on the importance of family involvement…. Keep writing. More informative, insightful articles will generate knowledge of addiction, but more importantly, that recovery and healing are possible for the individual and their families.

Wow! That was a very powerful article. Besides treating the patient, I think it is of paramount importance to involve family members, because this web is inseparable, and the family dynamics remarkably influence the situation of the patient and vice versa. Thanks a bunch for sharing. A big eye opener.

A very good and timely read. When dealing with substance abuse issues it just makes since to treat the whole family rather than just the individual. The identified patient is just a representative or a symptom of what is going on in the family. Excellent post.

In my work in intervention and equally important after in patient treatment is to instill hope and reconnect entire family system with resilience – genograms and time lines help!! Great article!!

Absolutely – no man is an island… Systemic/Holistic treatment is critical so long as the individual is amenable to such an approach. I might add that surface dysregulation is exactly that – “surface”. The individual’s presentation (surface dysregulation) is complex, and integrally related to basic needs assessments, family, friends, support networks, work/school, culture, backgrounds, etc.

Thank you for reminding me the importance of systemic thinking, Dr. Cohen! Unfortunately, it seems a missed voice in the doctoral psychology training programs I am familiar with.

So true Ronald! family therapy is a key component and so often overlooked, or therapists move in to blame the family with adolescents for the drug use.
